What
is it that you do first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to
sleep? Most likely check your Facebook. Am I right? Without being aware of it,
we have all become Facebook addicts. Well, not just Facebook, now there is also
Twitter and Instagram, but it is the first one that is of my concern. Like it
or not, especially Facebook has become an important part of our daily lives.
What for? Are we updating statuses, changing profile pictures, posting pictures
of everything from; food we eat, parties we attend, coffee dates, places we go,
personal changes i.e. when we lose a pound or two, or when we simply want to
show our ripped bodies etc. Well, there isn’t anything you won’t see on
Facebook. You don’t even need to read the newspaper, or watch the news anymore,
because every event in the world is most likely posted on Facebook. We are
simply spending too much time on cyber space and less and less time on real
life and what really matters. But, why is it that we spend this much time in
front of the computer or our smart phones checking our Facebook? Are we trying
to impress someone? Are we seeking the attention we need? Or are we simply
battling our battles with low self-esteem? Or is it a fine combination of all
these things? Instead of chasing our dreams, do some voluntary work, spend time
with our friends and family, go for a long walk, we are sucked into the
superficial world of Facebook. Well, no matter what the reason for our
Facebook obsession is, we cannot be blind to the fact that it has become an
issue. Well, I certainly believe so. Correct me if I’m wrong. But over
the years Facebook has created so much drama, jealousy, competition and stress,
leading to break ups, low self-esteem, bulling, destroying friendships etc.
Furthermore, it has made us lazy, uncertain about, who we truly are, due to two
things; firstly the fact that many of us are portrayed as someone we are not
and secondly the fact that we compare our life and ourselves with our friends
on Facebook. And then there are those like bottoms that when you don’t use
them, you may offend someone, make them doubt your friendship or even make them
believe that the reason for you not liking their status, pictures etc. is due
to the fact that you may be envious of their lifestyle or that you don’t like
them anymore. So my point here is simple and clear; Facebook has created
uncertainty, jealousy, confusion, stress and drama among other things. However,
on the other hand, no matter all the negativity, I believe that we couldn’t
imagine a life without Facebook.
I agree with most you write, but I don't think Facebook has created all you mention. I think we are the culprit! Or some individuals with shallow values. Facebook just makes it possible to express these and other things. Its all about how you are raised and whats important in your life. Some of us are worried what we project out to the world, how we are seen, and some about sending out a carefully painted portrait that looks amazing to look at. BUT, even the Mona Lisa has cracks in the paint when you get a closer look. In any case i rather be disliked or not noticed for who I am than be loved and admired for who I'm not.
ReplyDeleteWow TRUE THAT:) I couldn't agree more!!! All I wanted was... to make people realize some things, not to say that what I say is true or not, only to focus on what really matters and not to lose your true self in this crazy-cyber-superficial world.
DeleteSome times i like to lose myself in it:) But then i play a computergame and for few hours I am in another world, in another time in another state of mind. I am battling evil, saving the world, and yes, I manage still to look fabulous hehe ;P
